Shot Peening Integration
in Tempering Processes of Steels
for Enhanced Fatigue Performance

Overarching goal

The goal of the project is to enable the fabrication of improved components for electric vehicles (EVs) using new more eco-friendly manufacturing processes (e.g. energy savings of 15-20% during production of shot peened components), helping reach the EU targets regarding CO2 emissions.

Objectives

The main objective of the ShotTempering project is to enhance the in service performance of electric vehicles components like gears, etc. by means of the application of the innovative warm peening technology to be developed.

Development and optimization of a novel warm peening process that will, for the first time, implement shot peening at temperatures of up to 500 ºC

Increasing max. compressive residual stress value by 20-25 % in comparison to conventional peening of hardened and tempered material and warm peening respectively.

Assessment of the possibility of integrating the shot peening and the tempering operation in one single process (named warm peening), leading to a simplified production process and thus a process time reduction and a decrease of energy consumption

Deep analysis of the benefits that the implementation of the proposed fabrication process would bring to the automotive industry.

Partners

The consortium of the ShotTempering project consists of i2m, a dedicated SME technology development & management consultancy and coordinator of the project, the research institute KIT as well as Sidenor, one of the major European steelmakers, CRF, an end-user, and Stresstech, a reference SME manufacturer of machines for measuring residual stresses.
