The ShotTempering project benefits from the diverse profiles of the companies within the consortium, including a research institute, a steelmaker, a residual stress equipment manufacturer, an automobile manufacturer, and a specialized technology development & management consultancy focused on innovation. This diversity allows to harness a wealth of knowledge across multiple domains, encompassing material  science, metallurgy, residual stresses, industrial procedures, process simulation, among others.

i2m GmbH is a technology and innovation company. With a team of engineers and experts in strategy development, as well as technology and innovation management, i2m offers a holistic approach to its clients, who are active in technology-intensive industries in Europe (mobility, industrial goods, energy, pharmaceuticals & chemicals).

i2m, located in Graz / Austria, is active in two business areas: on the one hand as an engineering company in product and technology development (also own products/ solutions, e.g., "High Performance Latent Heat Storage" for automotive applications, system simulation tool for components sizing in early development stage, energy management solutions for stationery and mobile applications), on the other hand as a management consultancy focusing on strategy, technology, and innovation management.

Role:

  • Project management and coordination

  • Support evaluation of demonstrators

  • Analysis of developed processing routes regarding its environmental, economic and societal impacts

  • Dissemination

The Institute for Applied Materials – Materials Science and Engineering (IAM-WK) is active in the field of research, education, and innovation on structural and functional materials, particularly for mechanical engineering applications. We aim at revealing relationships between processes, structure and properties. The research activities of our seven research groups focus on the fields "Conditions and Properties", "Materials Development" and "Processes". Therefore, we run specialized laboratories and workshops which are also used for education of our students in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. For both programmes, we conduct lectures, tutorials and lab courses as fundamental and advanced courses.

In the framework of the research of the group "Production and Component Behaviour" the interactions between production processes, component state and component behaviour under mechanical loading are investigated. The goal of the investigations is to adjust the production process in such a way that an optimal component condition is achieved. The production processes considered are available either in the laboratories of production techniques of IAM-WK or within cooperation with institutes of production sciences.

3_Sidenor.png

SIDENOR is one of the European leaders in special steel long products. With an installed capacity of 1 million tonnes per year, it produces straight bars (round and flat), bar in coil and wire from a range of 5.5 to 220 mm diameter of high-quality engineering steel grades. 100% of the Sidenor production is sustainable give that all its products are manufactured from scrap (recycled steel). The main markets are automotive, energy, railway and oil&gas.

SIDENOR INVESTIGACIÓN Y DESARROLLO (SIDENOR I+D) is the research and development centre of SIDENOR. It has a manpower of 49 people (94% of them are PhD and engineers) working in 2 departments: Process and Product. It has its own Research Laboratory, which is equipped with modern test facilities both for metallurgical characterisation and for physical simulation. One of the strengths of SIDENOR I+D comes from the easy access to the production plants to carry out at industrial level the required experimental work, process monitoring and data acquisition.

Role:

  • Raw materials selection, manufacturing and supply: three different special steel grades.

  • Characterization of the base materials: chemical composition, microstructure, hardness profile and mechanical properties.

  • Evaluation of the torsional fatigue performance of the three steel grades to compare ShotTempering optimized process with conventional shot peening.

  • Manufacturing and validation of the quenching and tempering route demonstrator, a torsion bar, through pulsating torsion fatigue tests.

Centro Ricerche FIAT (CRF) is an industrial organization having the mission to promote, develop and transfer innovation for providing competitiveness to STELLANTIS. CRF fulfils his task by focusing on the development of innovative products & materials, implementation of innovative processes, development of new methodologies and training of human resources. To properly cover a technological spectrum, CRF developed a global network with common research activities with national and international institutes, private and public research organizations, universities and companies. This network further strengthens the centre’s global innovation strategies, the implementation of specific activities locally, the creation of know-how and continuous monitoring to enhance competitiveness and further development in transportation vehicles and components, innovative materials and application technologies, as well as on innovative alternative propulsion systems and transmissions.

Two divisions are involved in this project:

  • “Materials Technical Expertise” (MTE) guarantees to the STELLANTIS companies the knowledge and applications of the materials starting from the innovation. MTE is the material laboratories for whole STELLANTIS group in EMEA.

  • “TECH Research & Innovation” supports the STELLANTIS plants to evaluate innovative production technologies according to technical and economical company strategic guidelines.

Role:

  • Mechanical (fatigue and tribological testing) and Metallurgical (residual stresses and material compliance) characterization.

  • OEMs process knowhow

Stresstech GmbH (Germany) was founded in 1999 and is part of the Stresstech Group headquartered in Finland established 1983, with locations in Germany and the United States.

Stresstech is manufacturer and expert for non-destructive and destructive testing solutions for process control and quality inspection. The methods used are Barkhausen Noise Analysis, residual stress measurement by X-ray diffraction and residual stress measurement with the ESPI hole drilling method. Furthermore, Stresstech provide service measurements and applications studies for these methods in the own accredited labs.
